Stillness is powerful. It soothes, rejuvenates and calms us. "Being still is like replenishing the stores. It gives us time and space to self-reflect and actually hear our thoughts," said Dr. Karin Lawson, PsyD, a Psychologist. She continues to note that “stillness produces the anti-stress fix by allowing us some chill time without totally checking out and being numb to our experience.”
However, we are conditioned by the world to live busy. If we aren’t busy, we aren’t productive. Research has actually found that the complete opposite is true and what we need. Being still has proven to be far more beneficial than busyness as it can lead us to better health. It is found that taking only two to five minutes out of our day can do wonders to our well-being. It act as a reset button, an opportunity to refresh our minds, an opportunity to shift our attention from all the stress of the day and redirect it to more positive and productive thinking.
Stillness is not something we do. We don't ask people to "do" still. It is a being. It needs to be cultivated into a habit. We must practice it until it becomes second nature to us.
Here are some more benefits of stillness:
* Gives us new perspectives
* Gives us peace of mind
* Improves our memory
* Soothes our nerves
* Gives us rest
* Becomes aware of ourselves and environment
* Less prone to making rash decisions
So what does it means to be still?
André Gray, in his blog, Living Our Priorities, note the followings:
1. Being still doesn’t mean to physically BE STILL, and stop doing what you know to do.
2. Being still means; to be still in our mind, at peace in our heart and spirit, regardless of what’s going on around us.
3. Being still means; don’t be anxious, worried, uptight, or frantic about things. BEING STILL means to stop fighting the battles you know you can’t win in your own strength.
Be still and know ....
