SOAR: Check Your Mental Health Pulse
We often notice when our bodies feel tired, but we may overlook changes in how we connect, work, eat, and rest. SOAR offers a simple way to pause and ask, "How have I really been doing?"
Think about the past seven days and rate yourself from 0 to 10 in four areas:
S — Social: Have I stayed connected with people who matter to me, or have I been withdrawing?
O — Occupation: Do I have the motivation and capacity for my usual work, studies, responsibilities, or meaningful activities?
A — Appetite: Has my eating been reasonably steady, or has my appetite become much lower or higher than usual?
R — Rest: Am I sleeping and resting well enough to function during the day?
A score below 5 in any area is a cue to pay attention, not a verdict about your mental health. Ask what has changed, how long it has been happening, and what support might help. Look at each area as well as your total score. One low score can matter even when the others are high.
SOAR is a conversation starter, not a diagnosis. If a change persists, worsens, or makes daily life difficult, speak with a qualified health professional.
