RAISING CHAMPIONS

"An employee is
far more likely to be engaged when they have clear performance
expectations, the tools to do their job well and a manager who cares
about them as a person (rather than just an 'economic unit of
production') and communicates effectively with them." – Ross Clennett,
High Performance Recruitment Coach
Managing
people has evolved from command and control to more about development
and empowerment in this new millennium. A simple and inexpensive way to
improve employees or your children's competencies is through regular
coaching sessions
Here are five propositions about people development:
1. GIVE THEM TOOLS
"You're only as good as the tools you use."
When Gallup researchers went in search of the aspects of work life that
are most important to performance, one that emerged earliest was
measured by the statement "I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right."
2. GIVE THEM TRUST
For
a team to be unified, everyone within it must trust each other. You can
promote trust by modeling the behavior you want to see – this will help
it to permeate throughout the organization. You can also deliver
trust-building exercises, inspire your people to be honest and encourage
everyone to be accountable for their actions.
3. GIVE THEM TIME
According to a new study "Optimal Hours with the Boss"
from Leadership IQ, people who spent an optimal number of hours
interacting with their direct leader (six hours per week) are 29% more
inspired, 30% more engaged, 16% more innovative and 15% more
intrinsically motivated than those who spend only one hour per week.
4. GIVE THEM TRAINING
All
development is the result of learning. The most effective way to
motivate people is by investing in their continued development. When you
focus on training and investing in your people's futures, they will
return the favour by demonstrating improved skills, increased motivation
and better performance.
5. GIVE THEM TRIALS
One
of the most important things you can do to nurture and retain talent is
provide them with personal development opportunities. Employees need to
constantly be challenged to keep them engaged.
"Champions
are not the ones who always win races - champions are the ones who get
out there and try. And try harder the next time. And even harder the
next time. 'Champion' is a state of mind. They are devoted. They compete
to best themselves as much if not more than they compete to best
others. Champions are not just athletes." - Simon Sinek
