Exercising Self-Control

Self-control is one of the beautiful fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22–23, where the Apostle Paul writes, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." Unlike self-discipline that depends solely on human determination, biblical self-control is the result of the Holy Spirit working within the believer. It is the God-given ability to govern our thoughts, emotions, words, and actions according to His will rather than being driven by sinful desires or fleeting emotions.
Every day, believers face temptations that challenge their self-control—whether in anger, speech, lust, greed, or pride. The flesh urges us to satisfy our own desires immediately, but the Spirit empowers us to choose obedience instead. Exercising self-control means pausing before speaking harsh words, resisting sinful temptations, managing our emotions wisely, and making decisions that honor Christ. As we continually walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), He strengthens us to say "no" to ungodliness and "yes" to righteousness, reflecting the character of Jesus in our daily lives.
Growing in self-control is a lifelong journey of surrender rather than self-reliance. Through prayer, regular meditation on God's Word, and dependence on the Holy Spirit, believers gradually become more mature in Christ. Although we may stumble, God faithfully continues His work of transformation in those who trust Him. When self-control becomes evident in our lives, it serves as a testimony that the Holy Spirit is producing His fruit within us, bringing glory to God and blessing those around us.

We
will not operate in any of the fruit of the Spirit without self control.
The fruit of the Spirit is not about how we feel, or about our
personalities, but about what we choose to do.
